Les Éditions CEC inc., a subsidiary of Quebecor Media Inc. (hereinafter “CEC”, “we” and “our”), wishes to inform you of the use we make of the information we collect when you visit our web site (hereinafter the “Site”) or when you make a purchase on our web site. Therefore, this Privacy Policy (hereinafter the “Policy”) defines the way in which we collect, use, disclose and process the information you provide to us when you use the Site and make a purchase on the Site.
Information CEC collects about its customers
When you purchase products or register for a promotional contest or to our newsletter, CEC may ask for your name, address, email address, payment information (credit card or PayPal) and, if you agree, certain other information.
CEC is aware of the issues raised with respect to the circulation of personal information and internet browsing information and wishes to work with you to ensure that your privacy is respected and protected. We would therefore like to explain what type of information we collect when you visit the Site as well as when, how and why we collect such information. CEC wishes to point out that we limit both the quantity and the type of information collected. Please read the following lines carefully and refer to them on a regular basis to learn about changes that may be made through an update of this page.
“Personal Information” is information about an identifiable person, meaning that such information may be used to identify you as a user of our Site, such as your last name, first name, home address, email address, credit card number or telephone number.
Please rest assured that no Personal Information is collected on our Site without your consent. In specific circumstances, but still in an honest and lawful manner, that is, when creating your account, CEC asks that you enter your last name, first name, address, email address and certain other Personal Information in an online form (including to make a purchase). Therefore, when CEC asks you for such information, you are always explicitly warned in advance and are told that you are providing us with information that will form the subject of a series of operations related to the collection, recording, use, modification, retention and destruction of such Personal Information. CEC will provide you with the means to verify whether your personal details are correct and up-to-date. In addition, CEC may ask you, on such forms, whether you would like to receive information about other services, contests or news about CEC or its partners. You always have the option to decline such offers or end your subscription for a personalized service (such as our newsletter) previously selected by you.
We may also automatically collect general anonymous information regarding your use of the Site, such as the date and time you visit the Site and the pages you visit on the Site. Our servers may also collect information about the type of browser you use, as well as the IP address of your computer and the name of your internet service provider. This type of information is not Personal Information, but rather Browsing Information. Please see the section entitled “Browsing Information” below to better understand our policy in that respect.
Your email may also be depersonalized (hashed, in accordance with certain procedures) so it can be added to the browsing data.
Collecting Personal Information simply allows CEC to provide you with the goods ordered, but also with services tailored to your needs, improve the content, interface and characteristics of the Site based on the information collected, contact you should you win a prize and, if you have expressed the desire to receive information, to send you information by email from time to time. Such usage data is also used for control purposes and is intended to improve the use of the Site.
It is important to clarify that we will not transfer, sell or disclose your Personal Information in any manner whatsoever to third parties, including our advertisers, other customers or partners, without first obtaining your express consent. Notwithstanding the foregoing, your Personal Information may be disclosed to (i) the subsidiaries and affiliates of CEC, it being understood that your express consent will be requested when you provide such Personal Information for one of our paid services or a contest, and (ii) third-party companies commissioned by CEC in order to store or process such information for and on behalf of CEC pursuant to contractual agreements that guarantee that such Personal Information will be kept confidential and secure. Please note that CEC may use the services of third-party companies located outside Canada. Therefore, and even if CEC requires such third parties to keep Personal Information confidential and secure in accordance with the standards prescribed by law, in certain rare cases, the laws in force in foreign countries may allow for Personal Information to be disclosed to judicial, quasi‑judicial or government authorities.
Personal Information collected by CEC is saved on servers inaccessible to the public and is protected by security measures that reflect the level of sensitivity of the information. Please rest assured that your Personal Information is protected by security measures against loss, theft, unauthorized changes, use, copying or viewing. In order to protect the confidentiality of your Personal Information, CEC maintains administrative, technical and physical safeguards to prevent unauthorized access and changes to and use and disclosure of Personal Information in our custody and control.
We will keep Personal Information only if necessary or relevant for the purposes set out in the Policy or as required by law.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, and despite our good intentions and the measures in place, no data transmission on the Site or over the internet in general is completely guaranteed or secure. Therefore, we cannot maintain, justify or guarantee that your Personal Information will be protected against loss, misuse or changes during transmission, and we can therefore not assume responsibility for any Personal Information you send and which third parties may use or misuse if such Personal Information is intercepted during transmission over the internet or if we are subjected to computer hacking.
CEC does not guarantee complete efficiency or security. Hackers may be able to access the server. Therefore, please bear in mind, BEFORE USING YOUR IDENTITY TO BROWSE AND/OR CARRY OUT TRANSACTIONS on the Site, that ill-intentioned individuals may access CEC’s servers and use certain Personal Information provided by its members for their own purposes. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES shall Les Éditions CEC inc., or any of its administrators, be liable for computer hacking or any damage or loss resulting therefrom. The Site may occasionally be down and certain programming errors may be caused by updates or events that are beyond the administrators’ control. When making online purchases, you can check whether or not you are in secure mode by making sure that the URL (web address) starts with https://www.editionscec.com rather than http://www.editionscec.com.
The padlock symbol in your browser window confirms that you are in secure mode.
To summarize, the only situations in which CEC may disclose Personal Information, other than those expressly provided for by law, are as follows: (a) at the request of a lawful authority or in good faith if doing so is deemed necessary in order to comply with applicable laws and regulations; (b) to intervene in a legal action, prevent fraud, protect or defend the rights or property of CEC or the users of CEC, and (c) to intervene, in extreme circumstances, in order to protect the personal safety of the users of CEC or the public.

Without your consent, we will not share your Browsing Information with any third parties other than our Partners and certain affiliates or related companies of Quebecor Media Inc., in the manner described under question 2 and based on the same objectives as those described in question 4. In addition, in such a case, we will take all available measures to ensure that they use the Browsing Information in accordance with our instructions and this Policy, the law and any other appropriate security or confidentiality measures.
Browsing Information is collected to allow us to
(a) generate statistical data about our level of readership, the performance and use of our sites and their content, and the type of person interested in our sites;
(b) improve your browsing experience. For example, the settings on your browser [that is, the preferred language, time zone and plug-ins] will be suggested to you by default during subsequent visits to our Site so that you will not repeatedly need to enter certain parameters that are specific to you.
Browsing Information may be kept on our servers, the servers of our service providers or, if applicable, the servers of our Partners. It is kept only as long as necessary to achieve the purposes described above, after which it is deleted.
Unless you expressly state otherwise, by browsing the Site, you agree to have your Browsing Information collected in the manner and for the purposes set out above. However, you may, at any time, through your browser, delete the cookies on your computers or disable the function that keeps or archives cookies on the Site. There are also certain functions that allow you to disable certain cookies and only keep those you want to keep. For more information, please see the parameters of your browser.
If you choose to disable cookies, you can still access the information on the Site. However, if you disable the cookies, the Site will consider you a new user each time you visit.
Certain advanced functions of the Site may unintentionally be affected, as certain cookies ensure interaction between the various pages of the Site. If disabling the cookies affects your browsing, please contact us at any time through the contact information provided on the Site.
You can validate or change your Personal Information at any time on the page entitled “My account.” You can also do so by contacting CEC’s customer service directly. In order to close your account, please contact CEC’s customer service directly.
